The Humble Cane

Ritual & Practice
The Humble Cane

There is something about a cane that commands my attention.

Not because it is cruel, but because it asks for presence. There is no rushing it, no hiding from it, no pretending. For a few moments, everything unnecessary falls away.

Consensual corporal punishment has fascinated people for so long. It isn't simply about pain. For many, it's about focus, surrender, trust, ritual, and the strange clarity that can emerge when body and mind meet in the same moment. A type of purification.

For me, there is a particular delight in administering the cane. Its elegance. Its precision. Its honesty.

A well-held cane says very little.

And somehow, manages to say a lot, bringing body and mind together.
